Chocolate peanut butter smoothie is perfect for breakfast, dessert, a snack, or anytime! This velvety smoothie brings together everyone’s favorite duo – chocolate and peanut butter. Vegan & gluten-free.

Chocolate and peanut butter were made for each other.

They’re Sherlock & Watson.

They’re Liz Lemon & Jack Donaghy.

They’re popcorn & nutritional yeast flakes.

Not only do chocolate & peanut butter complement each other, they also enhance each other’s best attributes. Nutty, salty peanut butter with sweet, rich chocolate is perfect harmony.

Dessert in smoothie form

But there’s no reason why you have to wait all the way until dinnertime for dessert. In fact, you can start the day with it with this chocolate peanut butter smoothie.

It gets its sweetness from frozen bananas, which give the smoothie a thick, shake-like viscosity.

The chocolate comes by way of cocoa powder. There’s vanilla extract to balance out the rigidity of the powder, peanut butter, and a pinch of salt to enhance their attributes.

Frozen banana smoothie tip

When you notice that your bananas are getting overripe, break them into 5 even pieces, and pop them into a freezer-safe container. Freeze. Then wait for the smoothie urge to strike.

I like to break them into consistent even pieces, so that no matter how many bananas get added, I always know that 5 pieces equals one banana.

How to make a chocolate peanut butter smoothie

Chocolate peanut butter smoothie ingredients: banana, peanut butter, vanilla, non-dairy milk, and cocoa powder.

Put the following into a blender:

  • Frozen bananas
  • Non-dairy milk
  • Peanut butter
  • Cocoa powder
  • Vanilla
  • Salt

Depending on how thick you like your smoothies, you can use more or less non-dairy milk. Any non-dairy milk will work here: soy, cashew, almond milk, or whatever you like.

Pour the smoothie into one or two glasses.

If you’re feeling fancy, grab a couple of chocolate chips and a microplane zester. Then you can make it snow chocolate over the top of your chocolate peanut butter smoothie. Finish it off with chopped peanuts.

Here are more vegan smoothies I know you’ll love:

Chocolate peanut butter smoothie

Everyone loves the salty sweet goodness of chocolate peanut butter cups. Now you can enjoy that delicious combo together in a slurp-able smoothie.
This makes two small drinks or one full-sized drink. Amounts will vary, depending on how much non-dairy milk you use.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 to 1 cup non-dairy milk
  • 2 bananas frozen in chunks
  • 3 Tablespoons natural peanut butter
  • 1 Tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch salt
  • 1 non-dairy chocolate chip finely grated (optional garnish)
  • 1/2 Tablespoon peanuts chopped (optional garnish)

Instructions

  • Combine 1/2 cup non-dairy milk, frozen banana chunks, peanut butter, cocoa powder, vanilla extract, and pinch of salt in blender.
If the blender needs more liquid to run smoothly or if you prefer a thinner drink, add an additional 1/4 to 1/2 cup of non-dairy milk.
  • Pour smoothie into one or two glasses.
To jazz it up, finish with a garnish of chopped peanuts & grated chocolate (optional). I like to use a microplane zester to grate the chocolate chip.

Notes

Any non-dairy milk will work for this recipe: soy, cashew, almond milk, etcetera. Cashew milk is my preferred option.
To lower the fat & calories of the smoothie, you can use two Tablespoons of peanut butter instead of three.

A classic combination! I also break up my bananas before freezing, though into 8 smaller pieces. I have seen some people freeze them whole and stick them in the blender that way, or try and break a frozen banana, but I love having my banana chunks on hand.

Yes, it’s so much easier in chunks! I’ve seen some people freeze them with the peel still on, which seems like a recipe for failure.
