    Ingredients

Here are the ingredients you will need to make this recipe.

Labeled ingredients for crispy pita ghosts Halloween snack.

Pita: Most pita bread is vegan. However, it’s best to check the ingredients just to be safe.

Avocado oil: Oil helps with browning and allows the herbs and seasonings to adhere to the pita chips. Spray is handy for easy coverage, but liquid also works.

Herbs and seasonings: Dried oregano, dried basil, onion powder, and salt.

    Step by step instructions

This section shows how to make this recipe at a glance with process photos of the steps. For complete ingredient amounts & instructions, keep scrolling to the recipe card below.

4-panel collage showing how to cut out ghost shapes in pita bread, punch out eyes and mouths, toss with seasonings, and air fry until crispy.

    1. Use kitchen shears to cut pita bread into ghost shapes.

Planning on propping the ghosts up in the bowl of hummus? Cut somewhat flat bottoms for easier standing.

    2. Use a stainless steel straw to poke eyes and mouths into all of the pita ghosts.

    3. Put the pita ghosts into a mixing bowl and spray with avocado oil, making sure to get all sides.

Then toss with the following seasonings:

    • Dried basil
    • Dried oregano
    • Onion powder
    • Salt

    4. Put seasoned pita ghosts into the air fryer basket, and air fry at 390 degrees for 5 to 7 minutes, stopping once or twice to flip the ghosts.

Remember: Every air fryer runs differently. Times given are a general recommendation and should be tested in your own air fryer. Adjust as needed.

Alternative baking instructions: To bake the pita ghosts in a standard oven, evenly place the ghosts on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes, stopping once halfway through to flip them over.

    5. Once the pita bread ghosts are crispy, serve them on a platter alongside your preferred dip.

Serving the pita ghosts with hummus? Stand three of them up in it, as if they are flying across it.

    Make it your own

Sun-dried tomato hummus smeared into pumpkin shape with celery for a stem.

You can make these crispy pita ghosts your own by varying the serving method or ingredients.

Serve with pumpkin-inspired hummus. Instead of having the ghosts propped up in the dip, serve them next to hummus that has been smeared with a spoon to look like a pumpkin. Then finish with a celery “stem.”

Vary the spices. Replace any or all of the seasonings with za'atar, salt, pepper, dried parsley, or granulated garlic.

Or make a sweet version with cinnamon sugar and serve with chocolate hummus! (If you’re doing a sweet version, you may want to replace the avocado oil with melted non-dairy butter.)

Make them oil-free. For oil-free chips, replace the oil with one or two teaspoons of lemon juice. Then toss with seasonings. If you’d prefer, you can even just air fry the pita ghosts plain.

    Ingredients

    • 4 pita
    • Several generous sprays avocado oil or drizzle about 1 Tablespoon
    • 1 teaspoon dried basil
    • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
    • 1 teaspoon granulated onion
    • ½ teaspoon salt

    Instructions

    • Use kitchen shears to cut the pita into ghost shapes. (If you're planning on standing the ghosts in hummus, cut somewhat flat bottoms on at least three of them.)
    • Put pita ghosts into a large mixing bowl. Generously spray the ghosts all over with avocado oil, making sure to get all sides. (If you're not using oil spray, simply drizzle in enough oil to coat, about a Tablespoon.)
    • Season the pita ghosts with dried basil, dried oregano, granulated onion, and salt. Use your hands or a spoon to toss the ghosts and get them evenly coated in seasonings.
    • Put the pita ghosts into the air fryer basket. Air fry at 390 degrees until crispy, about 5 to 7 minutes, stopping occasionally to flip the ghosts. (Timing will vary depending on the size of your ghosts and your specific air fryer.)
    • Once the pita ghosts are crispy and nicely browned, remove them from the air fryer basket, and serve with hummus or your preferred dip.
If serving with hummus, prop three of the ghosts into the hummus, as if they're floating across it. (It's best if the hummus is on the thick side for easy propping.)

    Notes

For oil-free air fried pita ghosts: These pita ghosts can be made out of one ingredient – pita bread. Just throw the ghosts into the air fryer and jump to the cooking instructions. Or if you like, replace oil with one or two teaspoons of lemon juice.
To bake ghosts in a standard oven: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Evenly space the pita ghosts across the baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes, stopping once halfway through to turn them over. You want them to be evenly browned on both sides.
