Air fryer wonton strips add delicious crunch to salads, stir-fries, and bowls. They’re also a tasty snack or appetizer with a dipping sauce – just like you might get with your Chinese takeout. Ready to eat in 5 minutes!

(Don’t have an air fryer? I also include alternative pan frying instructions.)

Crispy wontons on bowls with shredded cabbage, carrots, green onions, and vegan chicken.

Make your vegan egg roll bowl, stir-fry, or salad even more craveable with crunchy air fryer wonton strips on top.

Made with just 2 ingredients, they come together in a flash, and make any dish a little more fun.

Not just a topping, air fryer wonton strips are also a tasty snack or appetizer, alongside a delicious dipping sauce for dunking.

Sure, you can find ready-made wonton strips in some grocery stores (near the croutons). However, they taste so much better when made fresh, and they’re simple to prepare at home in just 5 minutes.

    Ingredients

Here are the ingredients you will need to make this recipe.

Labeled ingredients for air fryer wonton strips.

Wonton wraps: To keep this meal vegan, choose wonton wrappers that don’t include eggs. Nasoya plant based wonton wraps are my go-to choice.

Oil: Avocado oil spray is my preferred option, but any neutral-flavored cooking spray will work.

You’ll only need 8 wonton wraps from a package for this recipe. Use the rest of the wraps to make my chipotle tofu dumplings. (One of my favorite appetizers!)

    Step by step instructions

This section shows how to make this recipe at a glance with process photos of the steps. For complete ingredient amounts & instructions, keep scrolling to the recipe card below.

2-panel collage showing how to cut wonton wraps into strips, and then air fry until crispy.

    1. Use a knife, kitchen shears, or pizza cutter to slice vegan wonton wraps into thin strips.

    2. Add the strips to the air fryer basket, spray with oil, and air fry for about 4 minutes, until browned and crispy.

Remember: Every air fryer runs differently. Times given are a general recommendation and should be tested in your own air fryer. Adjust as needed.

    Pro-tips for extra crispy wontons

To level up your wonton strips, follow these simple tips:

    • Cut evenly-sized strips
    • Don't overcrowd the basket
    • Spray twice for even browning
    • To avoid burning, keep an eye on them after the 3 minute mark

    Alternative pan frying instructions

Crispy air fryer wontons on napa cabbage bowl with carrots and green onion.

If you’d prefer, you can fry the wonton skins in a skillet instead of air frying.

    1. Put a shallow layer of avocado oil in a skillet, and bring to a medium high heat. Add one wonton strip to the skillet. If bubbles immediately form around it, the oil is ready to use.

    2. Add the remaining strips and cook until browned and crispy (about 1 to 3 minutes).

    3. Remove from pan and drain on lined plate. Then serve.

    Make them your own

How to personalize these crunchy wonton strips:

    • Vary the thickness of the strips or cut the wonton wraps into triangles
    • After spritzing them with oil, add seasonings like salt, granulated onion, granulated garlic, or Chinese 5 Spice
    • Toss the crispy wontons with cinnamon-sugar for a sweet treat
    • Fry in oil instead of air frying

    Serving suggestions

Use this crunchy wonton topping on any of the following dishes:

    • Vegan egg roll bowl
    • Green salad with oranges and peanut dressing
    • Vegan pineapple fried rice
    • Brussels sprouts fried rice
    • Vegan ceviche
    • Potsticker soup

Or serve them as a snack with a dipping sauce:

    • Sweet and sour sauce
    • Chili crisp dipping sauce
    • Vegan honey mustard
    • Peanut sauce
    • Vegan sriracha mayo

    Storage instructions

Store leftover air fryer wonton strips in an airtight container at room temperature. They will keep for 3 or 4 days.

(For maximum crispness, I recommend allowing the wonton strips to cool completely before sealing in a container.)

If they lose their crunch, the fried wontons can be reheated in the air fryer at 360 degrees until crispy again.

Use any leftover wraps for other dishes like pan-fried tofu dumplings. Or store the wraps in a sealed container in the refrigerator or freezer for later use.

    Ingredients

    For crispy wonton strips topping

    • 8 wonton wrappers cut into long, thin slices*
    • Spritz of oil spray for air frying (I like to use avocado oil spray)

    Instructions

    • Put thinly sliced wonton wrappers into air fryer basket, and spray with avocado oil. Air fry at 360 degrees for 4 to 4 ½ minutes, stopping once to shake the basket and spray with more oil for even browning.
(Start checking doneness around the 3 minute mark. Air fryers vary, and the wrappers can go from brown to too brown fast.)
    • Once the wonton slices are nutty brown, remove from air fryer, and use as a crunchy topping on salads or bowls.

    Notes

*Wonton wrappers come in packages of about 50. You’ll only need 8 of them for this recipe.
How to pan fry sliced wonton wrappers
If you don’t have an air fryer, you can pan fry the wonton wrappers instead.
Fill a skillet with a shallow layer of avocado oil, and bring to a medium high heat. Once it seems hot enough, add one single wonton slice. If bubbles immediately form around it, the oil is ready.
Add the other sliced wonton pieces, and fry until golden brown (about 1 to 3 minutes). Then transfer to a towel-lined plate to drain.
    Storage & reheating instructions
Allow the wonton strips to cool. Then store any leftover strips in an airtight container at room temperature. They will keep for about 3 days. To reheat and crisp any leftovers, air fry at 360 degrees until perfectly crispy again.
