Dessert doesn’t get easier than chocolate covered oranges. With just 2 ingredients, and the help of the microwave, this sweet treat comes together in a flash. Vegan, kid-friendly & gluten-free.

Hand holding orange slice dipped in chocolate.

There’s something inherently romantic & decadent about chocolate covered oranges, strawberries, pineapple, or bananas.

Yet, what many people don’t realize is just how easy it is to make. In fact, you can make them by using just two ingredients – chocolate chips & orange slices (or the fruit of your choice).

(Some people add a teaspoon of coconut oil when melting the chocolate. However, I don’t find it to be necessary.)

Then with the magic of the microwave and a little time to harden in the refrigerator, chocolate dipped orange slices are yours in no time flat.

Remember this easy vegan dessert for your next dinner party or romantic evening in with your beloved. It would be especially nice for Valentine’s Day!

And if you’re in a hurry, I won’t hold it against you if you want to just melt the chips in the microwave, dip, and eat right away – like a lazy person’s dessert fondue.

How to find vegan chocolate chips

Non-dairy chips aren’t hard to find. In fact, a lot of the ones on the market are accidentally vegan.

When buying them, look for the words “dark chocolate” or “semi-sweet.” And of course, you’ll want to read the ingredient label.

They sell vegan chips in the bulk bin at my local co-op. And at Trader Joe’s, you can buy bags of the semi-sweet variety that are vegan.

How to make this easy dessert

Pour chocolate chips into a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave for 50 seconds, stopping once to stir.

At first, it may look like the chips are still in their same shape. However, once you start stirring, you’ll see that they’ve gotten very warm inside. Stir until everything is totally smooth.

Now you’ll want to work fast, because the chocolate is easiest to work with when it’s still warm.

One at a time, dip orange slices into the melted chocolate. (Remember it sticks best when the fruit is dry.)

Shake each slice a little, so that the excess chocolate goes back into the bowl.

Then place the dipped oranges onto a plate lined with parchment paper.

Continue until all of the orange slices are dipped.

Then move the orange slices to the refrigerator. Allow them to chill and harden for 15 minutes. Then serve!

How to make them look extra fancy

After you’ve dipped an orange slice & chocolate is running off the end, drizzle it over the other dipped orange slices already on the plate.

It adds lines of chocolate across the top that make it look extra professional. Once they dry, you’ll see drizzled lines hardened into the finish.

Make it your own

Make this easy dessert your own by adding a pinch of something extra to the dipped oranges while they’re still wet.

Sprinkle on:

  • A pinch of salt
  • Crushed nuts – like peanuts, cashews, almonds, or dukkah
  • Candy sprinkles
  • Crushed sandwich cookies
  • Coconut flakes
  • Cayenne pepper (only if you like things spicy, of course!)

Or use different fruits/sweets for dipping like:

  • Strawberries
  • Raspberries
  • Pineapple chunks
  • Mandarin orange slices
  • Banana slices
  • Cherries & maraschino cherries
  • Dried fruit
  • Vegan marshmallows
  • Pretzels & pretzel sticks

Chocolate covered oranges

It doesn't get easier than this simple vegan dessert. They look fancy, but come together in only minutes.
Get creative and switch up the fruit you use! This recipe also works with strawberries, pineapple chunks, raspberries, cherries, or even vegan marshmallows. They're all delicious dipped in melted chocolate.

Ingredients

  • 2 oranges peeled into slices
  • 1/2 cup vegan semi-sweet chocolate chips

Instructions

  • Melt semi-sweet chocolate chips in the microwave for 50 seconds, stopping once to stir. After 50 seconds, the chips still might look like they haven't melted yet, but once you start stirring, they will smooth out.
  • Dip orange slices into the melted chocolate, and lay them on a parchment paper-covered plate.
  • Refrigerate the dipped orange slices for fifteen minutes until the chocolate sets. Then serve!

Notes

The chocolate goes on easiest when it's warm. So be sure to work quickly after it has come out of the microwave.
The chocolate holds to the fruit best when the fruit is dry. So blot it with a clean towel if needed.
